Farming Practices

How we farm intensively, sustainably, and thoughtfully within a small urban growing space.

Farming Practices

With roughly 1.5 acres of growing space, Frog Bench Farms practices high-intensity farming year-round. This allows the farm to grow a diverse array of greens, vegetables, flowers, fruits, and more within a relatively small space. A variety of growing environments are used across the property, including in-field beds, unheated high tunnels, raised planting beds, and a heated glass greenhouse. These systems make it possible to extend the growing season and maintain consistent production throughout the year.

While not certified organic, the farm utilizes many organic growing techniques such as compost application, crop rotation, biodiversity in planting, and a mix of perennial and annual crops. Outdoor spaces are also designed with pollinators in mind to support ecological health and resilience.

Any additional products used are certified OMRI-approved organic, and materials are sourced locally whenever possible.

Frog Bench Farms is committed to sustainable and innovative farming practices. Water conservation is supported through the use of an extensive drip irrigation system, legal rainwater collection to supply the glass greenhouse, and circulating water systems in the indoor microgreen growing area.

The farm also makes use of solar and battery power when possible. Waste is minimized by creating on-site compost and repurposing crops into secondary products. The ongoing goal is to produce less waste while building soil fertility and long-term farm resilience.
